After launching 10 satellites, EchoStar has the capacity to offer over 500 digital video, data and audio channels of programming including local networks and HDTV.

In 1987, foreseeing changing technology in the satellite TV industry, EchoStar Communications Corporation filed for a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) license with the FCC. Since, EchoStar has launched 9 satellites.

Echo ITechnical Summary and Satellite Overview
In 1992EchoStar was granted an orbital slot at 119 degrees West Longitude. Three years later, DISHNetwork (Digital Sky Highway) was created. On December 28, 1995EchoStar successfully launched its first Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS), EchoStarI, and DISHNetwork debuted on March 4, 1996. In December 2000, EchoStarI was moved from 119 degrees West Longitude to 148 degrees West Longitude.

The company's second DBS satellite, EchoStarII, was successfully launched on September 10, 1996.

EchoStarIII, a Lockheed Martin A2100 satellite, was launched successfully from Cape Canaveral, Florida on an Atlas IIAS launch vehicle on October 5, 1997 and is orbiting at 61.5 degrees West Longitude.

EchoStarIV, a Lockheed Martin A2100 satellite, was launched successfully from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan on a Proton launch vehicle on May 8, 1998.

EchoStarVIII was lauched successfully on Aug. 21, 2002. The satellite is located at 110 degrees West Longitude. The satellite is one of DISHNetwork's primary satellites in offering its core services and local programming.

EchoStar VIIIThe EchoStarIX satellite is equipped with the first commercial Ka-band spot-beam payload for use over the United States and will be used to deliver future broadband initiatives for the company. The satellite also carries a Ku-band payload to provide video delivery and will operate at the 121 degree West Longitude orbital location.

EchoStarIX will join EchoStar’s current fleet of eight satellites that provide DISHNetwork customers with hundreds of all-digital television channels, including interactive TV services, sports programming, high definition television and international programming.
